afterschool

alt PREFACE:  Hello readers, both old and new.  After a much regretted hiatus, I am back to bring to your attention what I find relevant for this site (and for you guys) in terms of fashion and style.  Given one of the goals of this site is to generate awareness of the Asian entertainment industry, I feel I can stand on my soapbox and give a shout out to the eerily illustrious lady on the left.

DAUL KIM.  SUPERMODEL by today's standards...take from that what you will...  As far as I know, she by no means markets herself as an actress...nor does she aim to convince the music industry that she should be a pop singer.  But to me, the modeling industry is closely intertwined with that of the entertainment industry...and I hope most of you agree...after all, Vogue, up through last year, didn't put out a Fashion Rocks supplement for nothing...

More on Colter Loves Daul Kim After the Jump:

I first happened across the beautiful Ms. Kim in the spring of 2007 while watching videos the 2008 resort shows as they were coming in.  She was walking in the Chanel Resort show and she wore this:

And then this:

Gorgeous.

I remember this all because (1) Asian faces runway always catch my attention given their scarcity and (2) Chanel's resort show was especially memorable that year given it was staged at the Santa Monica Airport...pretty original wouldn't you say?  Since then, I've seen her walk for an impressive roster of big name labels:  Louis Vuitton, Alexander Mcqueen, Anna Sui, Rodarte, Dolce & Gabbana (as well as D&G), Vivienne Westwood, Dries Van Noten, and so forth and so forth.  Her editorial work is just as impressive and she's been featured in the spreads of a wide variety of magazines, both Korean and non.

But what's more interesting to me is her own personal blog.  Titled, "I Like to Fork Myself," Daul, through her own personal photos and entries gives us not only a behind the scenes look at what being in the modeling world is like, but also a candid character sketch of who she is in real life, or how she would like to be perceived by the rest of the world.

Case in point (or, a couple of my favorite images I've gleaned off of her blog):

Apparently the above photo generated some controversial buzz in Korea...I personally think the picture looks artistic, sexy, and fun.

The entry to the following picture is titled, "say hi to what i do off-duty" and is followed by "I EAT LITTLE CHILDREN WHO PLAY TOO MUCH VIDEO GAMES during london fashion week."  Hillarious...

Behind the beautifully polished exterior she may extoll on the runway lies a girl who gives beautiful meaning to the word "rotten," which I use with only intrigue, admiration, and compliment.  At times, she shows off her fun side (as above), other times, she's gentle, kind, and subdued.  She's got plenty of personality and emotion to spare, she's funny, she's daring and open-minded, and most importantly, she's adding dimension and depth into how Asians are regarded through eyes outside of Asia.  In the end, she is real.

To me, that is worth sharing.
