While translating this summary of the contract, I was beginning to get angrier and angrier. I am not an avid fan of any KPop artist and nor am I into any fandoms. I am simply a person who loves the music. So in an unbiased tone, I would like to say that this contract is bullshit (pardon my language) and all other SM artists should follow the brave actions of Mickey Yunchun, Xiah Junsu, and Hero Jaejoong. Jump to see the contracts for SM artists.

This was published in a Seoul Newspaper today.

It's a summary of the much detailed contract.

So are many of the other companies, don't just hate on SM, that'll only make it hard for SM artists.
Most if not all companies run slave contracts.

wow the percentage that they are getting from the albums sold is B.S. it's a shame because music and entertainment is what they love and yet their company is all about making money. does anyone know the dollar amount of what they are making? reminds me of what nsync went through. from wiki:n 1998, 'N Sync had a publicized legal battle with Lou Pearlman, due to what the group believed were illicit business practices on his part.[14] 'N Sync sued Pearlman and his record company, Trans Continental, for defrauding the group of more than fifty percent of their earnings, rather than his promise of only receiving one-sixth of the profits.[14] The group threatened to leave and sign with Jive Records, which prompted Pearlman and RCA to countersue *NSYNC for $150 million US and the use of the name.[citation needed] NSync, citing breach of contract.[15] The injunction was thrown out of court.[14] After reaching a settlement out of court[16], *NSYNC signed with Jive.

also, entertainment industries see singing groups as money making machine. Welcome to the world of business, where it's a dog-eat-dog world and all about money. I don't think it's only sm that is nasty. Any entertainment industry will do something shady like letting go of a singer or a group because they don't generate enough revenues for the company. It's unfortunate regarding what happened to those poor guys with sm, but at the end of the day, it's their fault for being blinded upon signing the contract.

you're right anonymous,

that is true, but there are countries (like the US) that protect the signee in regards to some contract terms and obviously the ruling on the matter by the courts in Korea suggests that Korea some what does too.

its unfortunate but compared to united states, koreas entertainment industry as a whole is a giant mess.

wow. i new it was bad but i never imanged it to be this horrible.
dont get paid for regular on shows?
than what does suju get paid...leeteuk and eunhyuk rnt paid for kang shim jang?
(i know its tvxqs contract but its the same for suju too)
and they pay for their codys and manager? wtf?
and the part that really really upset me is the music and lyrics
music is personal. theres no reason that other groups should sing what tvxq writes....even with permission.
im really glad that tvxq is doing this. h.o.t and shinhwa should have been the ones to do this tho. just quitting and breaking off or entering a different company was not enuff.
hope it improves for other artists in sm too.

no wonder they are getting sued. What a greedy company!
i reckon its because DBSK is ReeALLy popular now, so they are taking
advantage of it. MONEY HUNGRY BASTARDS!!

I totally feel sad for DBSK.
They shouldn't be treated like this.
Sorry to ask, but aren't there still groups and singers like SNSD, f(x) and so on, are they receiving what DBSK gets too?
Sorry again, I didn't have much time to read thoroughly.
I am just trying to care the SM artists as much as anyone else.

THAT IS DISGUSTING!! In fact it is beyond disgusting! I am sooo mad at SM how the hell can they treat people like this!! damnit if the Korean government doesnt do something about this i will personally go to Korea and kick some SM ass if i have to!!!!! I am taking a copy of this and sending it to Amnesty International!! ! SM will not get away with this. This is beyond just being about DBSK every single one of SM artists are under this kind of contract! dont forget that many of them ARE CHILDREN. I have completely lost faith in Korea as a forward modern nation if they continue to allow this SLAVERY to go on in their country! They must understand with the popularity of groups like dbsk and suju that there are people across the world watching this situation. How bad must it look on them! SM are EVIL. Absolutely evil. I might just be one small fan but I'LL BE DAMNED IF I LET THIS MADNESS CONTINUE TO MY FAVOURITE IDOLS! /endrant

kokonut, thanks for replying my comment.
I really hope SME can provide the best treatment for the SM artists in the future.
5% of the profit is actually very low for those artists who worked so hard, let alone 2%. -_-
Why do they need so much money for?
It's quite stupid for this contract to exist.

Like WHAT?! How can the SM do that to them? How can they do that to DBSK!? They're taking advantages of all of the member's talents. All i want to say is they're STUPID! [ hahaa. i'm being so rude now ] BUT STILL, how can they do that!? Btw, i think that the other artists that work under SM have a contract is slightly much more different. Maybe the other artist's contract are not really that HORRIBLE than DBSK's. That's why I feel so SAD AND BAD for DBSK. SM is soooooo meann! OMIGOSH!

when DBSK on Show, they get nothing
SM can give anyone inside the company the song which is composed by DBSK

How can a person as human being so heartless? LSM is not human being, he is a real devil.

the thing that LSM have done beyond my imagination. He should go jail for damaging the basic human right.

o_o I am happy they went through with the lawsuit. It has definitely opened the doors for everyone else hopefully. This contract is a slave contract. I calculated (and this is at 5 percent, assuming each album is $8 [the formula I used was: 200,000 cd's x $8 x .05]) so their revenue from an album would be $80,000. Divide that 5 ways: $16,000. Now, with 16 k, let's assume each member pays about $2,000 for their manager. Their money is now at $14,000. We'll assume that grocery wise, they pay about $5,000 a year. That's now at $9,000. $9,000 a YEAR. People working at McDonalds make more in a year than these guys do...

People working at McDonalds make more in a year than these guys do...

Holycrap 0___o That is sooo disturbing! Thanks for sharing this with us. I'm completely speechless... SM should go to jail for this. Think about all the hours and everything the boys have to sacrifice and that is all they get? Some people say money isn't everything and its about what you accomplish in life... They aren't even allowed to accomplish anything according to this contract! I'm writing to amnesty right now... I can't call myself a fan if i sit here reading articles but not do anything!

they got nothing from their sponsorships, commercial deals, etc.

omfg... that's all they get for selling that many albums?! eff SM! to the people who are auditioning for SM, please read this before making your final decision, that is, IF you make it to SM. i know one thing for sure, DBSK deserves more than that and they need to GTFO of there! and umm, just to let you know, DBSK splits everything evenly for whatever they get paid, such as commercials, sponsorship, etc. and in korea, they don't pay you that much for a commercial shooting (according to my cousin's husband who's brother is a commercial/music video producer & director, average is about $20-$50 million won depending on the brand).

OMG, WTF.. I had heard most of this but looking at it all together that is crazy. I know the company needs to make money for handling the group but the artist themselves also need to make a living.. That is really an unfair contract for any artist in any entertainment company.. I agree with a prior comment.. Most of these artist, especially DBSK are smart enough to manage themselves by now.. I can't wait till they are able to do so.
