On charges of drunk driving and hit and run, Super Junior's Kang In (legally Kim Young Woon) was fined 8 million Won. 8 million Won is equivalent to around $7,144 (not $8,000) in United States.
The Seoul district prosecutors office went extremely lenient on Kang In. Kang In on October 16th, 2009 was driving under the influence and also decided to drive off after getting into an accident. He hit a parked cab with passengers and left the scene. Six hours later, he turned himself in. On the last day of December, they fined Kang In for 8 million Won.
Kang In was able to avoid any prison time and jail sentence.
Kang In was arrested on charges of assualt on September 16th for getting into a fight while intoxicated at a bar type location.
After these two incidents, SM halted all his activities.
Do you guys feel as if this was too easy of a punishment? Did he get special treatment because of his celebrity status? Should he have faced jail time?
I'll be comparing the United States law to Kang In's charges just for the sake of showing you guys how easy he got out of this situation. In the United States, a DUI is usually considered a misdemeanor. However, if someone was injured as a result of drunk driving (ie: Kang In hitting the parked cab), some states will raise it to a felony. Misdemeanors from a DUI can get a sentence of up to one year in county prison and felonies usually results in state prison sentence of more than a year. This is everything not considering the hit and run.

(I'm not assuming, I know for a fact because I am Korean and I know how things work there.)
"In South Korea, DUI is taken very seriously. The criminal punishment for DUI ranges up to 2 years in prison or fines up to 5 million won. Independent of the criminal punishment, an administrative punishment of a 100 day suspension or revocation of the driver’s license may be imposed."
Add Kang In's hit and run charges, it still doesn't look pretty.
Why? We know that how much SM pay its artists..
& yeah, some say that it's unfair & compared Kangin's case to GD & Jaebum's cases..
Jaebeom was kicked off from South Korea while GD might face jail time & fine..
But Kangin just faced fine around $7000..
Whatever it is, I hope Kangin will learn some lesson from what happened..
so he got off going to jail by paying 8mil instead of the max 5mil won~ so no words on his licence and such?
i agree his case isnt pretty at all,its bad but he probably got all of the above stated except for jail~
1. his driving licence taken by the State for a year;
2. a ban from operating all manner of transportation for a year;
3. order for, say, 100 hours of community service;
4. order to attend driving refresher course, complete with exam and all;
5. public apology (unless he has done this
I mean, dude, come on! I love partying to the wee hours and all, but had those people died, whatever cuteness or slick dance moves you have will be completely incinerated from memory. Just get a buddy to drive you home when you're pissed drunk, how easy is that?
I hope he and all of us who drive (me included:) ) learn from this. Dude, you've been given one more chance, so learn your lesson. peace
though i have to say kangin's case is worst than gd's but gd's case hasn't been official that he will go to jail or etc. so can't really compared to that either
lastly thank god no one was hurt when kangin did the whole hit&run thing while he was drunk or w.e.. i do agree that he does deserve some community hours and he probably wont drive for a while. so let's just move on from this topic.
I believe he got off much too easy. A DUI and Hit and Run is an assault and danger to the innocent people around him.
He should face jail time or lots of community service, but as you know, although we don't like it, celebrities always get better treatment.
Always.
Anyways don't hate me for my comment, because you know it's true.
